Car Inspections

Vehicle inspections help ensure that a car or truck is in working order, can pass emissions tests, and meets all other requirements necessary for a vehicle's registration.

Mavis offers state vehicle inspections for your personal or commercial vehicles in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Texas, and Louisiana.

At Mavis, we’re committed to helping drivers care for their vehicles. Good vehicle health begins with a visit to one of our inspection stations.

What is a State Vehicle Inspection?

A state vehicle inspection involves the examination of a vehicle’s tires, fluid levels, belts, lights, wipers, battery, hoses, and other components. State vehicle inspections  are required periodically to ensure that all vehicles in-use comply with safety and emissions regulations. Regardless of age, regular vehicle inspections are recommended for commercial vehicle fleets, cars and trucks.

Motorists may need to get vehicle inspections routinely over the lifespan of ownership. New vehicles receive an inspection, and vehicle registration renewals can also trigger the need for another inspection. Inspections are also required when a vehicle title transfers between owners.

Each state has different inspection requirements and exemptions, which is why Mavis service centers conduct vehicle inspections on a state-by-state basis.

When Should I Get My Vehicle Inspected?

Your vehicle must be inspected routinely as determined by the specific state where the vehicle is registered. There are other signs that may indicate you should have your vehicle inspected:

  • Your dashboard chimes with the check engine light, or the dials on your dash display unusual readings

  • You hear strange sounds coming from any part of your vehicle, especially grinding or other metal-on-metal sounds

  • You experience strange or sweet smells inside or outside your car after you turn off the engine

  • You notice oil leaks or see excessive exhaust smoke

  • The engine won’t start, or stalls while running

  • Your gas mileage suddenly seems less efficient

  • Your car pulls from side-to-side when driving, or feels unexpectedly bouncy or turbulent

Used Vehicle Inspections

If you’re buying a used vehicle, scheduling a pre-purchase inspection can help put your mind at ease. Used vehicle inspection reports can help a potential buyer know the condition of a vehicle before purchasing.

What Happens During a Car Inspection?

Our technicians begin  with a visual review of the vehicle, and then complete technical measurements for vehicle emissions. Finally, they may perform additional tests to ensure that the vehicle operates as expected.

Mavis Vehicle Inspections cover the following:

  • Body exterior

  • Under the hood inspection, including the engine compartment, transmission, battery, and electrical controls

  • Suspension, brakes, wheels, and tires

  • Steering

  • Clutch

  • Exhaust system

  • Fuel system

Following the visual and emissions inspection, technicians may offer a short road test as part of the assessment.
